Machine tools are designed to operate within controlled geometric relationships. When a machine is moved, those relationships can change. Floor condition, foundation support, anchoring, leveling pads, weight distribution, and settling can all influence how the machine sits.
Even small changes in level or twist can affect accuracy, especially on larger equipment or machines with long axis travel.
Why Re-Leveling Matters
Leveling is not only about making a machine appear straight. It helps restore the machine’s intended geometry and support. A machine that is not properly leveled may produce taper, out-of-square cuts, inconsistent finishes, or axis binding.
After a move, the machine should be leveled and checked before it is expected to hold production tolerances.
Alignment Should Be Verified
Depending on the machine type, relocation may require checking straightness, squareness, tram, spindle alignment, table travel, ram movement, rotary axis relationships, and other critical geometry. Larger machines, grinders, boring mills, lathes, and multi-axis equipment may need especially careful inspection.
A test part can help, but it should not be the only verification method. Measurement-based alignment provides a clearer picture of machine condition.
Systems Should Also Be Checked
During a move, cables, hoses, lubrication lines, coolant systems, way covers, electrical cabinets, and guarding may be disconnected, disturbed, or exposed to contamination. These systems should be inspected before the machine is returned to full production.
