Hand Scraping & Alignment

Hand Scraping & Alignment Services

Restore Geometry. Recover Accuracy. Protect Your Ways.

At Precision Service Machine Tool Rebuilders, we’ve been restoring the accuracy and life of machine tools since 1983. From our facility in Addison, Illinois, we help manufacturers get the most out of the iron they already own—by bringing worn ways, slides, and structures back into proper contact and alignment through proven machine tool alignment practices.

When your machine is no longer holding tolerance, cutting straight, or producing the finishes it once did, the problem is often mechanical wear and geometric error—not the control. Professional hand scraping and alignment can restore those critical relationships so your machine cuts true again and help improve the precision of machine tools across demanding applications.

Our Hand Scraping & Alignment Capabilities

Way & slide hand scraping

Restoring proper contact on box ways, V-ways, dovetails, and flat ways on columns, saddles, tables, and rams.

Turcite / Rulon replacement & fitting

Removing worn liner material, preparing surfaces, bonding new material, and scraping it in for proper bearing and oil film.

Gib fitting & adjustment

Hand scraping and fitting tapered or flat gibs, then setting preload for smooth motion with minimal play.

Geometric alignment

Leveling and aligning bases, columns, saddles, and tables to re-establish straightness, flatness, squareness, and parallelism between critical axes.

Spindle & head alignment

Checking and correcting spindle-to-table alignment, head nod and tilt, quill alignment, and spindle axis to machine travel.

Slide and ram reconditioning

Correcting wear on vertical and horizontal rams, cross rails, and heads; restoring proper support over the full stroke.

Dovetail & box way rebuilding

Re-establishing true bearing geometry so slides track properly rather than “falling” into worn spots.

Complementary grinding & fitting

When appropriate, we combine precision way grinding with hand scraping to achieve the required geometry, then fit mating components together.

The result: a machine that moves smoothly, holds consistent geometry, and supports accurate, repeatable cutting.

Common Machines We Hand Scrape & Align

We hand scrape and align a wide range of CNC and manual machine tools. Below are some of the most common categories we service.

CNC Vertical Machining Centers

  • Box-way and combination box/linear-guide VMCs
  • 3-, 4-, and 5-axis vertical machining centers
  • Vertical mills with worn Z-axis box ways or column ways
  • Machines with turret-style or ram-style heads requiring head alignment

CNC Horizontal Machining Centers

  • Horizontal machining centers with box-way columns and saddles
  • Twin- and multi-pallet horizontals with B-axis index tables
  • HMCs needing spindle-to-pallet and pallet-to-pallet alignment

Horizontal & Vertical Boring Mills

  • Table-type horizontal boring mills (HBMs) with worn saddle and table ways
  • Floor-type HBMs requiring column, headstock, and table realignment
  • Vertical boring mills and vertical turning lathes requiring table/ram realignment

Bridge & Gantry Mills

  • Bridge mills with worn cross-rail and saddle ways
  • Gantry mills requiring parallelism between rails and squareness of cross-travel
  • Large-part machining centers where geometry must be restored over long travels

Manual Knee & Turret Mills

  • Bridgeport-style vertical mills with worn knee and saddle ways
  • Toolroom mills needing table flatness and tram restored
  • Older “heavy iron” mills that are structurally sound but geometrically tired

CNC Lathes & Turning Centers

  • Slant-bed CNC lathes with worn bed ways and saddle contact surfaces
  • Flat-bed CNC lathes needing headstock and tailstock realignment
  • Multi-axis turning centers requiring turret-to-spindle alignment

Manual Engine & Toolroom Lathes

  • Engine lathes with bed wear near the headstock and carriage droop
  • Toolroom lathes where taper, finish, and carriage tracking must be restored
  • Machines needing tailstock scraping, fitting, and alignment to spindle centerline

Vertical Turret Lathes (VTLs)

  • VTLs requiring table bearing surface correction and ram alignment
  • Machines where head slide ways and cross rail must be brought back into plane

Specialty & Multi-Spindle Lathes

  • Multi-spindle and chucker lathes needing consistent spindle-to-slide relationships
  • Custom turning equipment with complex mechanical linkages and slides

Surface Grinders

  • Reciprocating surface grinders with worn table and saddle ways
  • Rotary table grinders needing table bearing and column alignment restored

Cylindrical & Centerless Grinders

  • OD/ID grinders requiring headstock, tailstock, and table alignment
  • Centerless grinders needing workrest support and slide geometry restored

Jig, Tool & Cutter Grinders

  • Jig grinders requiring precise slide and column geometry for fine tolerance work
  • Tool and cutter grinders with worn ways affecting wheel-to-work relationships

Roll & Specialty Grinders

  • Long-bed roll grinders where straightness and crowning depend on accurate ways
  • Specialty grinding machines where geometric error affects finish and form

Drill Presses & Radial Drills

  • Radial drills requiring column, arm, and head alignment
  • Heavy drill presses with worn tables and column ways

Production Drill / Tap Centers

  • High-speed drill/tap machines needing spindle-to-table alignment
  • Machines where repeated cycles have worn slides and ways out of square

Line Boring & Honing Machines

  • Line boring equipment where bar alignment and support require accurate ways
  • Horizontal and vertical honing machines needing column and table geometry restored

In addition to full machines, we also hand scrape and align critical components and supporting equipment:

  • Rotary tables and indexers
  • Machine bases, saddles, and cross slides
  • Riser blocks, angle plates, and fixtures
  • Way surfaces for auxiliary axes and attachments

When Hand Scraping & Alignment Makes Sense

Restore lost accuracy – Parts are coming out of tolerance, taper is inconsistent, or features won’t line up.
Improve surface finish – Finish quality has degraded even with good tooling and cutting parameters.
Correct geometric errors – Machines are cutting taper, out-of-square, or leaving steps between passes.
Stabilize older heavy machines – “Heavy iron” machines are structurally excellent but mechanically worn.
Support a control retrofit or rebuild – They plan to invest in new CNC or major rebuild work and need a solid mechanical foundation.
Extend machine life – They prefer to keep a proven machine and process running, instead of replacing it.

Our Hand Scraping & Alignment Process

We use a structured, measurement-driven approach so your machine returns to production ready to earn:

Consultation & Symptoms Review

We discuss your parts, tolerances, finishes, and how the machine is currently performing.

On-Site Evaluation or In-House Inspection

We inspect ways, slides, and structures; measure wear patterns; and check geometry with precision instruments.

Scope & Proposal

We define the surfaces to be scraped, alignments to be corrected, any Turcite/Rulon work, and related mechanical tasks—along with timing and budget. As machine rebuild experts for manufacturers, we ensure every recommendation is aligned with production goals and long-term performance.

Scraping, Fitting & Alignment

Our technicians hand scrape bearing surfaces, fit gibs and liners, then level and align the machine to restore its geometry, ensuring proper machine tool alignment throughout the process.

Verification & Test Cuts

We check straightness, flatness, squareness, and alignment; perform functional checks; and, when appropriate, verify with test cuts or test grinds to further improve the precision of machine tools in real-world conditions.
