TOS® Machine Tool Rebuilding & Repair

At Precision Service Machine Tool Rebuilders, large-frame machine tools have been our specialty since 1983—and TOS horizontal boring mills, gantry/bridge-type machines, and heavy grinders are exactly the kind of production-grade equipment we’re built to support.

Our role is simple: keep your TOS equipment accurate, reliable, and productive for as long as possible through expert rebuilds, repairs, and modernizations—whether you’re running table-type HBMs, floor-type boring mills, or gantry and bridge machines.

Why TOS Owners Work With Us

TOS machines are built for serious boring, milling, and drilling of large, heavy components. Over time, even that level of iron sees:

Wear on beds, ways, tables, saddles, and rams
Spindle and boring bar issues (noise, heat, chatter, runout)
Table, saddle, and column wear showing up as taper or out-of-square conditions
Backlash in ballscrews, leadscrews, and nuts
Rotary table wear and indexing errors
Hydraulic, lubrication, and coolant problems
Electrical failures in motors, drives, and panels
Obsolete CNC, DRO, and drive components

We focus on:

Restoring or improving factory-level geometry
Improving uptime and consistency on critical production machines
Extending machine life at a fraction of new replacement cost
Modernizing drives, electrics, and controls when it makes sense
Protecting the value of proven TOS iron already on your floor

Types of TOS Machines We Service

We work on both legacy and modern TOS machines, manual and CNC, including:

Horizontal table-type boring mills
Horizontal floor-type boring & milling machines
Gantry and bridge-type TOS machines
TOS HBMs with DROs, rotary tables, and facing heads
TOS grinding machines
Select TOS manual lathes and related equipment (case-by-case)

If your specific TOS model isn’t listed, we’re still interested in discussing it.

What We Do for TOS Equipment

Tear-down to major castings for thorough inspection
Cleaning, stripping, and detailed evaluation of components
Way regrinding and/or hand scraping on beds, tables, rams, and saddles
Reconditioning or replacement of ballscrews, leadscrews, bearings, clutches, and gibs
Spindle, boring bar, headstock, and rotary table rebuilds
Gearbox, feed, and rapid-traverse overhauls
Restoration of hydraulic, lube, and coolant systems

On large floor-type and gantry/bridge TOS machines, we pay special attention to support and fixturing so the geometry we build in our shop is what you see on your floor.

Guidance on when to repair, partial-rebuild, full-rebuild, or modernize
Tapered bores, misaligned holes, and out-of-square faces
Chatter and poor surface finish on heavy roughing or finishing cuts
Excessive backlash in X/Y/Z/W axes affecting profiles and location
Spindle noise, heat, or vibration from bearing or alignment issues
Table or column misalignment causing tapered or out-of-parallel cuts
Rotary table indexing and positioning errors
Electrical failures in motors, drives, DROs, and legacy CNC/relay systems
Obsolete electrical and control components that are hard to source

Our TOS Rebuild Process

Evaluation & Scope

Disassembly & Cleaning

Down to major assemblies as required; components cleaned, inspected, and tagged for repair or replacement.

Geometry & Structure

Ways restored, slides fitted, twist and sag addressed, motion components rebuilt or replaced.

Subsystem Rebuilds & Upgrades

Spindles, gearboxes, lubrication, guarding, electrics, drives, and controls rebuilt or modernized.

Reassembly & Calibration

Machine reassembled, leveled, aligned, and function-tested over full travel.

Run-Off & Documentation

Cutting tests where appropriate, plus accuracy data, alignment records, and updated electrical/control documentation.
