Thermal growth occurs when machine components expand or shift as temperature changes. Heat can come from the spindle, motors, bearings, ballscrews, hydraulics, coolant, cutting process, sunlight, nearby equipment, or general shop conditions.
Because machine tools depend on precise relationships between components, even small thermal changes can affect part dimensions.
Common Signs of Thermal Drift
Thermal-related accuracy issues may show up as:

- Good first parts followed by drifting results
- Frequent offset adjustments after warmup
- Taper or positional errors that change over time
- Different results between morning and afternoon shifts
- Better accuracy after the machine stabilizes

These symptoms do not always mean the machine is worn out, but they should be taken seriously.
Machine Condition Still Matters
Thermal growth is normal to some degree, but worn or poorly maintained machines may react more unpredictably. Problems with lubrication, spindle bearings, ways, slides, ballscrews, alignment, or hydraulic systems can make thermal movement more difficult to manage.
A machine with proper geometry and smooth motion is generally easier to control than one that is already fighting mechanical wear.
